Practical Test

You can book your test up 24 weeks in advance and must pass your theory test before you can book your practical driving test.

The cost of the driving test is: £62.00 and you can only change it two times if required.

What to take to your test: Your provisional driving license.

4 Parts to your driving test:

  • Eyesight test
  • ‘Show me, Tell questions’ vehicle safety questions
  • General driving ability (including; Independent driving)
  • Reversing your vehicle

How Long The Test Lasts:

You will drive for 35 minutes (depending on traffic)

If you have been banned: You will drive for 65 minutes

Eyesight Test:

You must read a number plate from a distance of:

  • 20 meters for a new-style number plate
  • 20.5 meters for an old-style number plate

New-style number plates start with 2 letters followed by 2 numbers

ie: AB12 ABC

If you fail the eyesight test the driving test will end.

You will be asked 2 vehicle safety questions from the ‘show me, tell me questions

You’ll be asked the:

  • ‘Tell me’ question at the start of the test before you drive
  • ‘Show me question whilst driving

General driving ability including Independent driving

You will drive in various road and traffic conditions (not motorway)

You will drive independently for 20 – 35 minutes. You will need to follow:

  • Directions from the Sat Nav
  • Traffic signs
  • A combination of both

The examiner will let you know which one you will need to follow

They will set up the Sat Nav for you. You cannot use your own Sat Nav

If you cannot see the traffic signs:

If you cannot see the a sign (due to tree covering the sign) – the examiner will give you directions until you can see the next sign.

Going off route:

You will not get a fault for taking the wrong turning.. The examiner will direct back on route.

If you are not following Sat Nav or Traffic signs:

The examiner will give you turn-by-turn directions to follow

Pulling over at the side of the road

You will be asked to pull over and move off during the test, including:

  • A normal stop at the side of the road
  • Pulling out from behind a parked vehicle
  • A hill start

You may also be asked to perform the Emergency stop

Reversing your vehicle:

The examiner may ask you to perform one of the following exercises;

  • Parallel parking at the side of the road
  • Park in a bay, either by reversing in and driving out or driving in and reversing out.
  • Pull up on the right and reverse the vehicle 2 car lengths and drive off

If you make mistakes during your test:

You should carry on if you make a mistake, this may not effect the end result.

The examiner will only end the test if they feel you are a danger to road users.

Driving Test faults and your result:

There are 3 main faults you can make

  • A driving fault – no more than 15 minor faults – these are minor faults. However if you keep making the same mistake in the same skill area this can result in a serious fault.
  • A Serious fault – something potentially dangerous – A Major fault
  • A Dangerous fault – This is something that is dangerous to you, the examiner, the public or property

If you pass your driving test:

The examiner will give you the result at the end of the test.

  • Tell you what faults you made (if any)
  • Give you your pass certificate
